The Premier League is back — and Matchweek 1 certainly gave football fans plenty to talk about.

After a summer of transfers, managerial changes, and anticipation, the 2026/27 Premier League season finally kicked off with ten matches across four days. From statement victories and promoted clubs making their mark to late drama at St James' Park, the opening weekend offered an early reminder of why the Premier League remains one of the most exciting competitions in world football.

Arsenal Begin Their Title Defence in Style

Reigning champions Arsenal opened the new campaign at the Emirates against newly promoted Coventry City — and immediately laid down a marker.

The Gunners secured a convincing 3-0 victory, with captain Martin Ødegaard among the standout performers.

It was exactly the sort of start Arsenal wanted as they begin the difficult task of defending their Premier League crown.

Hull Stun Manchester United

One of the biggest stories of Matchweek 1 came at the MKM Stadium.

Back in the Premier League after a nine-year absence, Hull City produced a superb performance to defeat Manchester United 2-0.

Semi Ajayi opened the scoring before summer signing Nobel Mendy added another, giving Hull supporters an opening day they won't forget in a hurry.

For Manchester United, meanwhile, it was a frustrating start to the new campaign.

Promoted Ipswich Make the Perfect Start

Hull weren't the only promoted side celebrating.

Ipswich Town marked their Premier League return with a dramatic 2-1 victory over Sunderland at Portman Road.

With the scores level late in the game, former Sunderland player Jack Clarke struck in the 90th minute to give Ipswich all three points.

That's one way to announce your return to the Premier League.

Brentford Put Three Past Tottenham

Brentford produced another of the weekend's standout results with an impressive 3-0 win against Tottenham Hotspur.

Keane Lewis-Potter opened the scoring before Vitaly Janelt doubled the advantage. Michael Kayode completed an excellent afternoon for the Bees after the break.

New signing Mamadou Sangaré also caught the eye with an impressive Premier League debut.

For Spurs, however, it was an opening weekend to forget.

Brighton Run Riot Against Aston Villa

If you're looking for the most dominant performance of Matchweek 1, Brighton have a strong claim.

The Seagulls raced into a commanding position against Aston Villa and eventually recorded an emphatic 4-0 victory.

Jack Hinshelwood scored twice as Brighton made a spectacular start to the new campaign.

Manchester City Leave It Late

Manchester City's new era under Enzo Maresca began with drama at the Etihad.

Bournemouth looked set to spoil the occasion after taking the lead, but City turned the match around in the closing stages to secure a 2-1 victory.

Substitute Rayan Cherki played a decisive role, providing two assists as City snatched all three points.

It wasn't comfortable — but winning when you're not at your best is something Manchester City know plenty about.

Late Drama at St James' Park

Newcastle United against Liverpool rarely disappoints, and the opening weekend clash was no exception.

In an emotional afternoon at St James' Park, the two sides played out a thrilling 2-2 draw.

Newcastle looked set to claim a huge opening victory, only for Dominik Szoboszlai to convert a penalty deep into stoppage time and rescue a point for Liverpool.

Chelsea Win a Five-Goal West London Derby

Matchweek 1 concluded on Monday night with Chelsea travelling across west London to face Fulham.

The result was another entertaining encounter, with Chelsea emerging 3-2 winners.

Cole Palmer was at the heart of the action, assisting João Pedro for the opening goal before finding the net himself.

Palmer's performance was later recognised when supporters voted him the Premier League Player of the Matchweek.

What Did We Learn?

It's far too early to draw conclusions from one weekend of football, but there were certainly a few early warning shots.

Arsenal started their title defence strongly. Manchester City showed they can still find a way to win when things aren't going to plan. Chelsea and Cole Palmer look dangerous, while Brighton and Brentford produced two of the most impressive performances of the weekend.

Perhaps the biggest story, though, was the performance of the promoted clubs.

Hull City and Ipswich Town both collected three points immediately, showing that neither intends to simply make up the numbers this season.

At the other end of the spectrum, Manchester United and Tottenham already have questions to answer after disappointing opening defeats.
