Premier League Matchweek 2: Goals, Drama and Early Statements

The second weekend of the 2026/27 Premier League season is complete — and already the new campaign is beginning to take shape.

Matchweek 2 brought goals, late drama, big individual performances and another impressive showing from some of the newly promoted sides.

Manchester City and Arsenal maintained their perfect starts, Hull City continued their remarkable return to the top flight, Manchester United responded emphatically to their opening-day disappointment, and Chelsea came out on top in a seven-goal thriller.

Manchester City Make It Two From Two

Manchester City continued their perfect start to the season with an emphatic 4-1 victory away to Crystal Palace on Friday night.

After needing a late comeback to defeat Bournemouth in Matchweek 1, City produced a much more convincing result at Selhurst Park.

Two matches. Two victories.

It's still extremely early, but City have wasted little time establishing themselves at the top end of the table.

Hull City's Dream Start Continues

What a start to life back in the Premier League for Hull City.

After stunning Manchester United 2-0 on the opening weekend, Hull travelled to Coventry City and secured another victory.

Liam Millar struck in the 82nd minute to give the Tigers a 1-0 win and, remarkably, six points from their opening two Premier League matches.

Few would have predicted Hull making such an impressive start.

But they aren't simply enjoying their return to the Premier League — they're winning matches.

Newcastle Produce a Statement Win at Spurs

Newcastle United followed their dramatic opening-weekend draw against Liverpool with an excellent 2-0 victory away at Tottenham Hotspur.

Anthony Elanga opened the scoring before Yoane Wissa added Newcastle's second.

Four points from matches against Liverpool and Tottenham represents a very strong start for the Magpies.

Tottenham, meanwhile, have now lost their opening two Premier League matches following their 3-0 defeat at Brentford in Matchweek 1.

Liverpool Held at Anfield

Liverpool had to settle for another draw as Nottingham Forest left Anfield with a point.

The match finished 2-2, meaning Liverpool have drawn both of their opening Premier League fixtures.

After the dramatic 2-2 result against Newcastle in Matchweek 1, it's another entertaining match — but another two points dropped.

Liverpool certainly haven't lacked excitement so far this season.

Seven-Goal Thriller at Stamford Bridge

Chelsea and Brighton produced one of the matches of the season so far.

Chelsea raced into a commanding position before Brighton fought back, but the Blues eventually held on for a thrilling 4-3 victory.

João Pedro and Cole Palmer were once again heavily involved in Chelsea's attacking play, with Palmer scoring what proved to be the winning goal.

Chelsea have now scored seven goals across their opening two Premier League matches.

They have also conceded five.

If nothing else, Chelsea look like they are going to be entertaining to watch this season.

Bruno Fernandes Inspires Manchester United

Manchester United needed a response after their shock 2-0 opening-day defeat at Hull City.

They certainly produced one.

United defeated Ipswich Town 5-2 at Old Trafford, with captain Bruno Fernandes delivering the standout individual performance of Matchweek 2.

Fernandes scored a superb hat-trick in just 28 minutes as United registered their first Premier League victory of the season.

The Portuguese midfielder also contributed an assist as United produced 33 attempts on goal — their highest total in a Premier League match for almost a decade.

After a difficult opening weekend, this was much more like the Manchester United their supporters wanted to see.

Sunderland Get Their First Win

Sunderland responded to their opening defeat at Ipswich by securing all three points against Fulham.

Substitute Wilson Isidor scored the decisive goal after coming onto the pitch in the second half, giving Sunderland a 1-0 victory.

For Fulham, it means consecutive defeats to begin the new Premier League campaign.

Arsenal Keep Their Perfect Record

Defending champions Arsenal faced a difficult Monday night trip to Aston Villa — but once again found a way to win.

Bukayo Saka scored the only goal of the match as Arsenal secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory at Villa Park.

Saka has now scored in both of Arsenal's opening Premier League matches.

More importantly for the champions, it's two matches and two victories as they begin the defence of their title.

What Did We Learn From Matchweek 2?

Two matches certainly aren't enough to tell us how the season will unfold, but we're already getting some interesting early signs.

Manchester City mean business. Two wins from two and four goals at Crystal Palace puts City straight into the early title conversation.

Arsenal remain incredibly difficult to beat. The defending champions didn't need a spectacular performance at Villa Park. They simply found a way to collect another three points.

Hull are the early surprise package. Six points from six following promotion is an outstanding achievement.

Chelsea could be one of the league's great entertainers. Seven goals scored and five conceded in two matches tells its own story.

Newcastle have started strongly. Taking four points from Liverpool and Tottenham is an excellent return.

And then there's Bruno Fernandes. A hat-trick and an assist was exactly the response Manchester United needed after their opening defeat.

The Early Premier League Table Is Taking Shape

Manchester City, Arsenal and Hull City all finish Matchweek 2 with perfect records.

That's not a sentence many people would have predicted before the season began.

Chelsea are also unbeaten after winning both of their opening fixtures, while Newcastle have made an impressive start with four points from two difficult matches.

There is still an enormous amount of football to play, but the opening two weekends have already given us plenty to think about.

Matchweek 3 Is Coming

And things aren't slowing down.

Matchweek 3 brings another fascinating set of fixtures, including Arsenal against Chelsea, while Manchester United travel to Everton and Manchester City host newly promoted Coventry City.

Can Hull make it three wins from three?

Can Manchester City and Arsenal maintain their perfect records?

And will Manchester United build on their emphatic victory over Ipswich?
